'Domotoi' or 'Setsuka-Yae'
Truly double flowers of soft coloring and rounded petals come in irregularly shaped corymbs; the leaves of this hydrangea often are borne alternately rather than paired oppositely. Despite this odd feature it is lovely. This came from to us labeled 'Amethyst', a very similar cultivar introduced by Haworth-Booth, which has been mistaken for Domotoi in the past. Domotoi derives its name from the Domoto Nursery in Northern California, which in the first half of the twentieth century introduced many fine plants from Japan. In the country of its birth it is known as 'Setsuka-Yae.' Recently a reversionof this with single flowers in large mopheads occurred in the garden of our friend, Helen Miles. We hope to compare this sport with other known cultivars to see if we might determine Domotoi's origination.
