'Mariesii'
Long leaves and elegant lacecap flower heads with round-petaled sterile white flowers which crowd the circumference of the blue fertile florets and often pop up amongst them in a very playful manner. The eye or central floret of sterile blooms is often tinted blue or puce pink. Vigorous and beautiful. Sent to Europe from Japan by plant collector Charles Maries in 1879. This is a very significant cultivar historically; from it were raised the first seedling Hydrangeas introduced in France by Lemoine, known today as Lilacina, White Wave and Blue Wave. Believed by some to be the sport parent of the variegated lacecap hydrangea known widely as 'Tricolor', we have found that it is the sport parent of what we call 'Quadricolor' also known today under the name 'Lemon Wave'. However the more commonly grown variegated hydrangea which lacks the vivid yellow-green coloring is a sport of either 'Sea Foam' or of some other seedling of the wil maritime hydrangea.
