An unusual old cultivar with very pure white sterile florets which occur throughout the fertile ones making for a most unique floral form which is more relaxed than the typical lacecap form. The foliage is different as well, having something of H. serrata in it, very much like the leaves of the beautiful mophead Nikko Blue, pale green with a semi-matte surface, the softness setting off the white of the flowers. Lanarth White is more upright than spreading, setting it apart from the growth habits of most Hydrangea macrophylla cultivars. The name refers to Lanarth in Cornwall where this clone emerged as a branch-sport on Thomas Hogg, a white mophead. Lanarth White is believed to be identical with a cultivar grown in Japan long before. |
