This is a superb hydrangea for rich coloring, though it needs to settle into the garden to develop its best tones. Glyn Church in his book Hydrangeas, uses this to illustrate the danger of applying a color name to a hydrangea cultivar, as Red Star makes a very stunning cobalt blue when well cultivated. This has been around since at least the 1970's and perhaps longer, but we have found little addtional information about it. Very regular and large mopheads with large, showy florets are borne evenly over the handsome, deep green foliage. |
